Dear Families,
Welcome to second grade! I am delighted to be your child’s teacher. We will have many wonderful opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead. Together, we will help your child reach his or her full potential in school.
As a partner in your child’s education, I believe it is very important that we communicate regularly. Our classroom webpage and blog will be a good place to keep up-to-date with current events. We can also keep in touch through email, phone calls, and notes.
We will be taking the first few weeks of school building our classroom community and getting into our regular routine. More specific information will be communicated as we establish expectations. I have listed some important information below. Please read through it carefully and contact me if you have any questions.
§ TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHILD: I refer to this regularly!
§ VOLUNTEER FORM: a regular volunteer schedule will be sent out at the end of the month after our classroom community has been established. The volunteer schedule will begin the week of October 3rd.
§ PICTURE COLLAGE: First homework assignment! Please help your child collect pictures that will be included in his/her writing folder. The students will share the collages as a way to get to know one another and will keep them in their writing folders to help spark story ideas. It’s nice to have two-sided collages either taped onto paper or created digitally and printed out. This collage MUST FIT IN A SHEET PROTECTOR! Thanks in advance for helping your child with this assignment.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read the first letter home and for filling out the attached forms. Once again, I am very excited for all the fun times ahead! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely,
Jen Dickens

I have listed some important information below. Please read through it carefully and contact me if you have any questions.
- Parents have homework! Included in this welcome packet is some paperwork for you to complete and return to school by Monday, September 12th.
- Daily reading homework begins tonight! Our school-wide focus on reading includes a nightly reading-at-home. Soon, our class will begin our “Book Baggie” routine in which your child will be given books that he/she will read at both school and at home. It is important to maintain involvement with this program; we ask that your child reads for at least 100 minutes a week (about 20 min/night). Until the Book Baggies come home, choose books of your choice from home or the library.
- Take-home Folder: Every day your child will bring home an orange “boomerang” folder and must return it to school EACH DAY. Important notes and work may be sent home through your child’s folder. Papers on the “return to school” side will need to be filled out and sent back to school. Please take the time to go through your child’s folder and empty out what’s on the “keep at home” side. Feel free to send notes to me and/or the school on the “return to school” side of the folder.
- Before & After School: The first bell rings at 9:25 and the tardy bell at 9:30. There is morning playground supervision starting at 9:00. I may be in and out of the classroom until the start of school day, and welcome students into the classroom at 9:25. They can walk themselves directly to class (we won’t be lining up outside). Please let me know how your child gets home after school and when there is a change in your routine. School ends at 3:35.
- Breakfast/Lunch: If your child gets school breakfast/lunch please help them memorize their pin number. Please contact me if you need your child’s pin number.
- Birthday Schedule: We love birthdays! We will do a special song and ceremony in class where families are welcome to join. Please let me know if you are interested in joining the celebration in advance so we can plan a time that accommodates your schedule! If you would like to bring something to share with the class, you can do so with a book to read that is either loaned or donated to the class. As a school-wide policy, we will not be doing birthday treats. We will celebrate summer birthdays at the end of the school year in June. Invitations- Please do not deliver party invitations at school.
- Snack and Water Bottles: Your child will need to bring a daily snack to school. I find that fresh and healthy snacks keep us best energized. I suggest foods such as fruit, cheese, yogurt, etc. Please do not bring in juice, sweets, or chips. I will keep emergency snacks at school for kids who forget.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read the first letter home and for filling out the attached forms. Once again, I am very excited for all the fun times ahead! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely,
Jen Dickens
