Welcome to our class website!
I am so excited to start sharing the incredible learning that has been happening so far in 2nd grade! We have accomplished so much in our first six weeks together! It has been so great to get to know your 2nd graders and establish a positive classroom community. Within the past six weeks, we have spent a lot of time building our community by having regular class meetings, doing activities to get to know each other, and establishing classroom agreements to help us "win the game of learning" this year. We have had some meaningful conversations about how important it is to feel comfortable in our classroom in order to be a successful learner.
We have also spent a lot of time diving into our 2nd grade curriculum! Believe it or not, we are close to wrapping up our first units in math, reading, writing and science! Here are some of the key teaching points we have focused on in these content areas so far:
Math: Understanding place value to 1,000.
Writing: Narrative (small moment) stories
Reading: Building a reading life
Keep your eyes out for completed work being sent home in orange folders within the next few weeks as we wrap up these units! Also, we will be having our first writing celebration on Friday, October 28th from 1:35-2:05.
If you missed curriculum night, please check out my power point handout! You can find the links to these items under the "parent resources" tab. Please let me know if you have further questions or need clarification.
I am in the process of setting up the Remind App, which will be a quick way for me to send out important information throughout the week. Stay tuned!
If you are not receiving weekly e-mails from Sarah Morris, please let me know so we can make that change! She will be communicating important information each week.
If you have further questions or concerns, please e-mail me anytime!
Thanks,
Miss. D. :)

Math: Understanding place value to 1,000.
- Counting/skip counting to 1,000 by 2's, 5's, 10's, 100's. Students in 2nd grade should be able to skip count by 10/100 from any number between 1-1,000. For example, 262, 272, 282, 292, 302.
- Comparing numbers to 1,000. Using greater than, less than, equal to symbols correctly to compare numbers.
- Writing numbers to 1,000 using standard form, expanded form, word form, base ten form.
- ST Math
- Understanding soil components and studying WORMS :)
Writing: Narrative (small moment) stories
- Learning how to write strong introductions/endings for our stories.
- Including details and strong words to stretch our stories across multiple pages.
- Learning strategies to add author's craft to our writing.
- Bringing our stories to life by adding dialogue
- Writing conventions: proper use of capital letters and punctuation.
Reading: Building a reading life
- Choosing "just right books"
- Learning strategies for becoming more fluent
- Learning strategies for figuring out tricky words
- Building reading stamina
- Discovering who we are as readers by documented our reading at school and at home (reading logs)
